Frauds and Frenzies - yet another these-things-and-those-things film by the imfamous Larry Semon. This one has some interesting bits, but after I researched embedding this obscure russian video in Tumblr I realized that what I wanted to blog about was actually Huns and Hyphens, which has even less to do with Huns or hyphens than barrel of monkeys.

The gap between the two movements is an asyndeton: a rupture in the chain of significations where the spectator feels as if they has somehow skipped a necessary logical step. The bridge between the two movements has escaped us; the second (pot au noir; the “pitch-pot”) does not appear to be logically derived from the first (mise en place; the “set-up”). Suspenders not only allow and synthesize economically sound buys with purchasing aesthetically preposterous trousers - they defend the wearing of tools, which is to say the very use of tools. It’s not just a matter of function over fashion, because the covering of one’s skin is the function quota met. Rather, suspenders flaunt technology itself. By advocating (contra the belt) a counterintutive solution to holding up too-big-pants, they create the unknown space whereby people can look civil wearing things that don’t fit them for the expressed purpose of growing into them, both height-wise and thickness-wise. So it is not simply a solution to a purposed problem, like belts, as belts create no space and instead merely fill the lack (i.e. something “too big” has not enough “small” in it, and the belt is an injection of small). Where belts seek to extend the problematic space to suffocate itself in an act of pure denial, suspenders include the means of the mishap to transform itself, rather than provide a quick fix. Laughing at suspenders is the public defense of simple-mindedness, thoroughly anti-modern and tribal in thought; that is, less those who wear them.
